FHWA Briefing NCHRP 14-14: Guide for Optimal Timing of Pavement Preventive Maintenance Treatment ApplicationsThe objective of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 14-14, "Guide for Optimal Timing of Pavement Preventive Maintenance Treatment Application," is to develop a methodology for determining the optimal timing for the application of preventive maintenance treatments for flexible and rigid pavements. The research will also create a user-friendly tool to facilitate implementation of this methodology for the variety of pavement maintenance situations encountered by highway agencies; demonstrate the applicability of the methodology and the suitability of the implementation tool using data from a limited number of projects or other means; and develop a plan, for use by highway agencies to collect the data needed to support the proposed methodology. Applied Pavement Technology, Inc. is conducting the research. Phase I, the collection and review of information on treatment timing, selection and performance, identifying appropriate preventive maintenance treatments for consideration in the research and describing methodologies for identifying optimal timing of applications has been completed, and has been submitted to the NCHRP staff for final editing and approval. The publication is scheduled to be available in October or November 2004. Phase II, developing the guide and user-friendly tool are underway. NCHRP 14-14, Guide for Optimal Timing of Pavement Preventive Maintenance Treatment Applications, was published in January 2005 For more information, contact: System Preservation Engineer, FHWA |
