Number of People aged 55–64
Over the past ten years, the number of U.S. residents aged 55–64 has grown dramatically. This large increase is primarily due
to the aging of the baby boomers.

- Between 1984 and 2004, the number of people aged 55–64 increased
from approximately 22 million to 29 million. This increase is primarily due to the
leading edge of the baby boomers turning age 55 beginning in 2001.
- The U.S. Census Bureau projects that the number of people
aged 55–64 will increase to almost 40 million in 2014, 42 million in 2024, and then
decrease to 39 million in 2034.
