Frequency distributions of the concentrations of several constituents in 627 samples of the fresh waters in Japan have been examined. Ca, Mg, SO 4 and SiO 2 are lognormally distributed, or nearly so and as a result arithmetic mean and geometric mean calculations are accurately related. Cl is not lognormally distributed. These results indicate that lognormality is common in nature.
