Practitioner Courses

The Academy’s practitioner-oriented courses, held at the USIP headquarters in Washington and elsewhere, prepare professionals for work in and on conflict zones.

"The class was excellent. I have already recommended it to colleagues. It was especially useful since I am on standby with the State Department's Civilian Response Corps."—Franklin Garcia, U.S. Department of State

"I am using the knowledge I got from your course to deliver ideas and information to the women's NGOs I'm working with all over Iraq, and they are changing their work plans accordingly."Ferdos Majeed, National Democratic Institute for International Affairs

On-Campus Course Offerings:

The knowledge and skills imparted in the courses are based on lessons learned and best practices from the field. Instructors include people who have firsthand experience in conflict zones. Class sizes are small and participants interact with highly skilled senior practitioners. The courses impart specific skills through case studies, simulations, and small group exercises. In addition, the courses attract participants from a range of backgrounds (see chart below).

Courses are generally short, intensive week-long sessions, but can be delivered in other ways as well—evening classes over a semester, shortened weekend versions, one- or two-day executive seminars, and online. The Academy can tailor or create courses to meet special institutional needs.
