During 2011, the FAA improved airport access for general aviation by continuing to publish Wide Area Augmentation System Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance approaches, bringing the total nationwide to nearly 2,800. A major initiative to streamline departure and arrival traffic at 21 busy metropolitan areas where multiple airports compete for airspace is well underway. More than 300 Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast radio stations were operational by the end of 2011, providing coverage to the coastal United States, and along the border with Canada.
