What's New in NextGen: July 2012 Posting

Implementing NextGen initiatives involves complex activities ranging from concept development to deployments of capabilities in the National Airspace System (NAS).

Since June, 5 new ADS-B radio stations became operational, bringing the total to 398. Additionally, the network includes advisory services and separation services. A service volume is a defined volume of airspace in the NAS within which a set of ADS-B services are provided and the required performance for the set of services is achieved.

New service volumes were added in advisory services:

• 6 Terminal Service Volumes
• 1 Surface Service Volume

More specific localized capabilities enabled by ADS-B and a description of the three types of service volumes (En Route, Terminal and Surface) can be found on our website under technical maps.

Since May, we published new satellite-based navigation procedures:

• WAAS LPVs – 64
• Area Navigation (RNAV) routes – 14
• RNAV SID and STAR Procedures* – 28
• RNAV RNP Approach Procedures* – 15

*Note: We have modified these PBN categories to clarify that RNAV procedures include Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) and RNAV Standard Terminal Arrivals (STARs), and that RNAV RNP are approach procedures only.

Satellite-based procedures are updated every eight weeks and are real implementations that currently provide benefits. These implemented procedures and identification of other implementations can be seen on our interactive maps.
