Foundations of Futuring

Anytime--By adopting “forward thinking” processes, your organization over time can play a significant role in ensuring its readiness to adapt to evolving external factors and be poised to meet future demands.

Overview

What will our world be like in 5 years? 15? 25? What will the future bring in our corrections settings? A shrinking or growing inmate population? Water shortages that impact operations? Increasing or decreasing government budgets? Increased demand for a specialized workforce in corrections? An increase or decrease in the general population of the United States from which to draw staff members?

“Forward thinking” refers to a process / set of processes that includes monitoring issues that are important to an agency’s success, analyzing the trends these issues are taking, and developing possible scenarios based on such analysis. This enables you/your agency to create a roadmap to your most desirable future. Although we cannot predict the future with absolute certainty, adoption of futuring processes will place your organization in the best position to ensure its success.

Objectives

In this e-course, you will experience “forward thinking” or futuring processes applied to correctional settings. At various stages in the course, participants will individually explore multiple forward thinking processes through experiential learning activities targeting trend research, development, and impact analysis, scenarios development, and applications to their own organization. Also included will be a look at the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) current Forward Thinking initiative.
