Catalytic Upgrading of Thermochemical Intermediates to Hydrocarbons

Open Date: 03/21/2011

Close Date: 05/23/2011

Funding Organization: Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Funding Number: DE-FOA-0000467

Summary:

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking applications to develop fully integrated catalytic upgrading processes that will be capable of long term continuous processing of the proposed feed stream (from thermochemical degradation of raw biomass). The upgrading process can be stand alone (yielding a finished fuel/blend stock) or it can be a processing step that produces feed streams compatible with existing shipping/transportation infrastructure and petroleum refining unit operations. Successful applicants will be required to describe and discuss the comprehensive characterization of the selected catalyst(s), for the proposed upgrading process. Integrated experimental runs will be required to accumulate 2,000 hours of operating history on a single catalyst loading to form the basis of the catalyst characterization. This characterization will be expected to identify key relationships between various process parameters and the long term performance attributes of the catalyst. The effects of feed stream quality and recycled streams on catalyst performance as well as product yield, heat management, and product selectivity are to be reported. These projects will be critical in attracting private capital and the petroleum industry's support for the biomass to fungible hydrocarbon fuels pathway. This solicitation is expected to identify and potentially resolve technical processing issues associated with long term thermochemical intermediate upgrading, bringing the technology to a process development unit or pilot ready status at the end of the project performance period.

For more information, see the full solicitation.
