AWHONN’s first evidence-based clinical practice guideline addressing diabetes, provides comprehensive recommendations for nurses who care for women with diabetes-- types 1 or 2 and gestational diabetes (A1 or A2)--during pregnancy, labor and postpartum, and their babies. Included are recommendations for blood glucose targets and monitoring in pregnancy, intravenous insulin administration during labor, and neonatal hypoglycemia and feeding guidelines. The guideline will be invaluable for nurses, midwives, and nurse-practitioners working in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

The AWHONN Board of Directors is accepting nominations for the AWHONN Awards of Excellence to recognize members who have made a significant or outstanding contribution to the specialties of women’s health, obstetric or neonatal nursing at the local, state, national or international level. The Board of Directors has revised the awards to be presented in each of the following three areas: Practice (2 awards: one for bedside nurses and one for Advanced Practice Nurses), Leadership and Education (2 awards: one for academic or scholarly education and one for clinical education). Through the new Postpartum Discharge Education (PDE) program, nurses and clinicians will learn that incorporating consistent messaging into postpartum teaching prior to new mother discharge, can save lives. Using AWHONN’s POST-BIRTH warning signs checklist, new mothers can be aware of symptoms they may experience in the postpartum period and know when to seek medical assistance. AWHONN’s Board of Directors will make TWO scholarships available for AWHONN members to attend the Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) program in the Washington, DC area. NIWI provides nurses with the opportunity to learn how to influence health care through the legislative process. This three-day conference will energize and prepare attendees to become actively involved in the health policy process at the local, state and national levels.
