Census data create a portrait of our nation. Here are some facts about the U.S. population. In October 2006, the nation added its 300 millionth resident. The speed with which the U.S. population is increasing can be understood by realizing that the 200 millionth person was added just 39 years earlier in 1967. The 100 million mark was passed sometime between the censuses of 1910 and 1920. When the first census was taken in 1790, federal marshals counted just under four million people. The 2010 Census is expected to count some 310 million residents.
