ANNOTATION: Findings are presented from the Pathways to Desistance Study, the most comprehensive and current data set for serious adolescent offenders. Individuals working with justice-involved youth should be familiar with this summary. Major observations include: regardless of interventions utilized, most youth who commit felonies greatly reduce their offending over time; longer stays in juvenile institutions do not reduce recidivism; the use of community-based supervision as part of aftercare is effective for youth who have committed serious offenses; and substance abuse treatment reduces both substance use and criminal offending.
