In addition to being a resource, this glossary also intends to serve as a training tool to build the capacity of HIV/AIDS professionals serving Spanish-speaking populations. With this purpose in mind, the terms used have been categorized each under twelve areas, with the understanding that a term may belong to more than one category.

The categories represent domains or areas of HIV prevention work. This categorization is an attempt to organize the terms, to help others understand the field of HIV prevention, and to provide a context for the terminology. However, it is outside the scope of this glossary to classify and categorize the entire field of HIV prevention, and the authors do not claim to have included all the possible areas of descriptions. The Glossary Work Group is aware of the discrepancy these limitations may create. It is the hope of the authors that this glossary inspires others to conduct the much needed additional bibliographic research.

Each term has a number (0 through 12) under the field of “Category” that corresponds to the following areas:

  1. denotes no category;
  2. public health, health systems, programs/ interventions, social services, public policy, social issues / populations at-risk;
  3. health prevention/promotion, sexual reproductive health prevention/promotion, behavioral health;
  4. sex and sexuality, sexual behavior, sexual risk behaviors, sexually transmitted infections (STI), sexual anatomy, sexual transmission;
  5. drug use and risky behaviors;
  6. biomedical, clinical, treatment, vaccines, routes of transmission (not sexual nor drug related);
  7. research;
  8. cultural competency;
  9. technical assistance in organizational development (OD) and capacity building assistance;
  10. technical assistance for planning, implementation and evaluation of programs;
  11. finance / fundraising;
  12. colloquialisms; and,
  13. acronyms.
