ANNOTATION: "This study involved an examination of the relative effects of measures of inmate characteristics, features of facility environments, and managerial practices, including the perceived legitimacy of the correctional staff, on both the prevalence and incidence of violent, drug, and other nonviolent misconduct" (p. ii). Chapters of this dissertation following an abstract are: introduction; prisons and the problem of order; modeling prison disorder; research questions and method; findings; discussion; and conclusions -- rethinking theories of prison disorder. The more inmates who believe prison operations are fair, the less inmate misconduct occurs.
