Project Safe Childhood
Project Safe Childhood (PSC) is a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 that aims to combat the proliferation of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation crimes and other sexual offenses against children. In Idaho, PSC coordinates efforts by various federal, state and local agencies and organizations to protect children by investigating and prosecuting online sexual offenses involving minors, sexual abuse of children in Indian Country, human trafficking and sex offender registration violations.
PSC partners include the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force, the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Homeland Security Investigations, Secret Service, the U.S. Marshals Service, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, state and local law enforcement officials, county prosecutors and others.
At the beginning of PSC, very few investigators or prosecutors in Idaho had an expertise in high tech child exploitation cases. That has changed as a result of the momentum created by PSC. Today, a growing cadre of highly dedicated, well-trained individuals is working cooperatively across jurisdictional lines attacking child exploitation crimes.
Each year since the creation of PSC has brought progressively more involvement by our partner agencies in high tech child exploitation and sex offender registration investigations. Most notably, interest from higher-level law enforcement managers has markedly improved, as evidenced by more people being sent to training, additional staff being dedicated to PSC cases. This has resulted in the identification and apprehension of greater numbers of offenders, many of who are “hands-on” abusers, whose conduct is a hidden but very real threat to the community.
