Primary Topic: Materials-Asphalt Description: During construction of hot-mix asphalt pavements, density measurements are taken at various stages to monitor the effect of the rollers and ensure proper compaction. The most commonly used method of measurement is the nuclear density gauge. The nuclear density gauge requires licensing, training, and specialized storage due to the radioactive source contained within the gauge. An alternative method that does not require a radioactive source is desired. The Pavement Quality Indicator (PQI) has the potential to be such method. Thus, research to determine the capabilities and accuracy of this non-nuclear gauge currently on the market is needed.
