ANNOTATION: The process of collection and reporting of crime data by two federal criminal justice programs is analyzed. Sections contained in this report include: introduction; Uniform Crime Report (UCR); National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS); the UCR compared to the NCVS; and select issues. "The primary objective of the UCR is to provide a reliable set of criminal justice statistics for law enforcement . . . [while the] NCVS was created to provide previously unavailable information about crime (including crime not reported to the police), victims, and offenders" (p. 37). The NIBRS (National Incident-Based Reporting System) is also reviewed.
