Just a Jetty Fishing Kind of Day

The winter months are awfully good to me. This is when one good day can put jetty fishing at its best. Sheepshead, redfish, trout, bluefish, and drum – almost all these species can be found on and along the jetties this time of year.

PETA Changes Fish to Kittens

Thursday January 15, 2009
In an effort to get kids afraid to catch fish, PETA is now calling fish "sea kittens".

"You wouldn't put a hook in the mouth of a kitten, would you," says the rhetoric on PETA's website. They want kids to imagine their pet kitten or dog being drug around with a hook in their mouth. It's all part of PETA's "Stop Fishing" campaign.

Kids in Alaska where the publicity effort is underway generally say - fish are not kittens. Fish are our livelihood.

Looks to me like PETA took on the wrong crowd in Alaska!

Fishing a Bad Moon

Friday January 9, 2009
There are two times each month that I dread fishing. Today was one of them. You heard it right - I dreaded going today because I already knew what would happen. You see today and the next two days are the absolute full of the moon.

A cold front just went through yesterday and the sky was bluebird high behind the front. The wind was knocking along about 20 knots out of the northwest; the air temperature was about 40 degrees;and, the water temperature was about 50.

I should have stayed in bed!

The tidal current was so strong because of the full moon, that the crab trap floats looked like the movie Jaws where those barrels were being pulled under by the shark - water gushing around them and the current pulling them just under the surface. it was rippin'!

I did manage a few pictures for a future magazine article, and I did wring out a pesky live well problem I've been having. But, overall, it was a very cold boat ride. Good thing there were no paying customers! I believe the word would be, "skunked"!

Whatever your political persuasion, this article may mean we have a friend in the White House - who knows - maybe we can get funded in all states!
