Using Recovery Act funds from the Department of Energy’s State Energy Program (SEP), Ohio-based Lincoln Electric installed the largest capacity wind turbine in the state in June 2011. Measuring 443 feet tall and capable of generating 2.5 MW of electrical energy, the wind turbine serves as an onsite, utility-scale demonstration project. For a company that is internationally recognized as the world’s largest manufacturer for its welding, cutting, and joining products including components used in wind tower fabrication, it’s only appropriate that Lincoln Electric would have a wind tower installed at its Euclid manufacturing facility.
Designed as a multi-phase plan in partnership with wind turbine manufacturer Kenersys, project planning began in 2009. Subsequent plans include additional wind towers and creating a wind turbine production facility in the United States. The wind tower currently supplies Lincoln Electric with approximately 10 percent of its annual energy costs. Estimated to produce more than 6,000,000 kWh of electricity annually, the wind tower will lower the company’s annual electric costs by approximately $500,000. It will also reduce CO2 emissions by more than 8,000,000 pounds per year -- the same as removing 865 cars from U.S. roadways.
