Command Master Chief Bret Joel entered the Navy in November 1986 and attended basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Upon completion of basic training he reported to Naval Air Training Technical Center in Millington, Tenn., where he completed Avionics Class "A" school and Advanced First Term Avionics Class "A" school. After completion of training, he reported to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 33 for his first tour. While assigned to HSL-33 he completed deployments to the Arabian Gulf and Western Pacific onboard the USS John Young (DD 973) and the USS Harry W. Will (DD 986).

Joel’s sea duty assignments include HSL-45 from 1996 to 1999 and HSL-47 from 2002 to 2005. At HSL-45 he served as the leading petty officer for Det. 5 and 1 aboard the USS Ingraham (FFG 61) and USS Antietam (CG 54) respectively. After being selected for Chief Petty Officer in 1998, he served as the Avionics/Armament Division Chief Petty Officer. Joel completed his sea duty aviation maintenance career at HSL-47 serving as the leading chief petty officer of Det. 4 deployed onboard the USS Constellation (CV 64) and Quality Assurance Supervisor onboard USS Abraham (CVN 72). His first command master chief tour was with Strike Fighter Squadron 151 from 2007 to 2009 where he deployed once again onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). Shortly after his return from deployment, he assumed the duties as the command master chief for Carrier Air Wing 2, and in 2010, deployed for a third time aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). In January 2011, he transferred from CVW-2 and is currently serving as the command master chief for Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River Naval Air Station (NAS).

His shore duty assignments include: HSL-33 from 1993 to 1994 as the Avionics/Armament division leading petty officer. He then transferred to Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD), NAS North Island where he served as a workcenter leading petty officer until 1995. From 1999 to 2002, he served as maintenance training coordinator and senior instructor at Fleet Aviation Specialized Operations Training Group (NASNI). Joel’s last shore tour was at HSL-49 from 2005 to 2007 as the maintenance master chief petty officer.

Joel is an honor graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy, Class 134 (Brown), and a graduate of the CMC/COB course class 43. He is a Master Training Specialist and has earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Electronic Systems Technologies with a specialization in management from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, Ill.

Joel's personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards); Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards); Navy Good Conduct Medal (1 silver star), and a variety of unit commendations and campaign awards.
