New Orleans Man Pleads Guilty to Carjacking
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA — JESSE SCOTT, age 19, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court yesterday before U.S. District Judge A. J. McNamara, to conspiracy to use a firearm during a carjacking and carjacking, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten today.
According to the factual basis, two carjackings occurred on July 21, 2006, the first in Jefferson Parish and the second in Orleans Parish. In the first incident, an eighty-seven-year-old woman was accosted at gun-point by a masked youth and threatened unless she gave up her vehicle, a 2001 Nissan Sentra. Shortly thereafter, SCOTT, along with two other juveniles, crashed the Sentra at the corner of Hickory and Short Streets in New Orleans. Subsequently, SCOTT and the juveniles threatened at gun point a then-twenty-four-year-old woman who was getting off of work and carjacked her 1997 Chevy Malibu. This carjacking was witnessed by two neighborhood residents, who gave chase in their own vehicle and eventually rammed the Malibu. When the witness approached the driver, one of the juveniles fired a shot at him and the carjackers were able to escape with the Malibu.
The defendant faces a maximum statutory prison term of twenty (20) years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000 as to the conspiracy charge, and fifteen (15) years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine for the carjacking charge.
This case was investigated by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the New Orleans Police Department and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Michael E. McMahon and Sean Toomey of the Strike Force Unit.
