Summer Camp Expo

Our Summer Camp Exposition was held in Berkner on March 8, 2012 from 11:30 - 1:30.  Representatives from summer camps on Long Island were here to describe their camp programs and any "Counselor-in-Training" opportunities they may have.  Below is a list of the local camps who attended our 2012 "Summer Camp Expo".  For more information, call Liz Gilbert on Ext. 2315, email gilbert@bnl.gov.

Sick Family Member (SFM)

Employees can charge sick days (SFM) to care for a seriously ill or injured family member  for up to 5 occasions per payroll year (December 21 to December 20 of the following year). For more information, please go the Sick Leave for Care of a Family Member section in the Employee Handbook.

 
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) allows "eligible" employees to take job-protected, unpaid leave, or to substitute appropriate paid leave for up to a total of 12 weeks in a 12 month period.  FMLA leave will be granted for the birth of a child,  adoption or foster care of a child,  to care for a family member (child, spouse or parent) with a serious health condition, or due to the employee's own serious health condition. Flexible Spending Accounts

(Medical and Dependent Care)

Brookhaven offers two flexible spending accounts, the health care account, to help you offset rising medical costs, and the dependent day care account, to help you with day care costs.  These accounts allow you to allocate pre-tax dollars from your paycheck to cover eligible out-of-pocket health care or dependent day care expenses. For more information, please go to Flexible Spending Accounts.


Adoption

The Laboratory provides eligible employees financial assistance for certain expenses related to adoption of an unrelated minor child. For more information, please go to Adoption Assistance.

 

Relocation

An Information Guide is available to you to help ease the transition of relocating to Long Island.  Topics included are: cost of living; buying or renting a home; schools in the area; childcare; transportation; obtaining a driver’s license; taxes/financial matters; and quality of life. Brookhaven Employee's Recreation Association (BERA)

BERA promotes and regulates Laboratory-wide recreational and social activities at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  Activities include athletic competition, cultural, and social activities. Facilities include the gymnasium and weight lifting complex, swimming pool, tennis courts, Recreation Park (athletic fields and gazebo) and the Recreation Hall. (More)


Brookhaven Retired Employee Association (BREA)

BREA represents retiree interests and benefits; builds closer community ties between Brookhaven National Laboratory and its neighbors; creates a newsletter providing communication with retired employees; encourages activities for social interaction in the retirement community, and establishes volunteer efforts to assist in fund raising for the benefit of charities and local communities. Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day

Once a year, BNL participates in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day and this year’s activities took place on Thursday, April 26, 2012. This event was for girls and boys, ages 10 -14, where they spend time in the morning with their parents in the workplace and take tours of various areas on site in the afternoon.
