Acts of Violence

A historical overview of patterns of violence between the north and south Sudan can be found here. This section is limited to describing violence today in South Sudan.

The two greatest security threats for millions of South Sudanese is, first, the potential for continued violent interference by Sudan, either directly with the Sudanese Armed Forces or through use of allied militias. An overview of the patterns of violence deployed by the north is available here. Updates on the current situation are available here.

Secondly, a threat stems from those in the south who have or might be willing to resort to violence to assert their demands to the new South Sudan government. Included in this category are a host of disgruntled losing candidates from the April 2010 elections, former military leaders who have not otherwise found a place in the new country’s hierarchy of power, and ethnic minorities who feel marginalized by the SPLM.
