NIEM-UML Profile: One step closer to becoming an industry standard

NIEM, the National Information Exchange Model, provides a commonly understood way to connect data that improves government decision making for the greater good. NIEM enables diverse communities of people to consistently “speak the same language” as they share, exchange, accept, and translate information efficiently.

On Monday February 20th, the revised submission for the NIEM-UML Profile was delivered to the Object Management Group (OMG). A Unified Modeling Language (UML) Profile for NIEM aims to provide a standard for modeling NIEM artifacts (such as Model Package Descriptions, or MPDs) using UML.

What does this mean to you? In the very near future, you will be able to create a NIEM exchange with better visual tools. We anticipate that the profile will enable greater adoption of NIEM by tool vendors and will make it easier for developers of NIEM-conformant exchanges.

NIEM National Training Event: Are you registered yet?

I’d like to personally invite you and your staff the 2011 NIEM (inter)National Training Event, which is now just over one week away.  The (inter) reflects that our international adoption is gaining significantly.  We are not yet quite sure what to do about the National in our name.

If it is even possible, I think this year's agenda is even more compelling than our 2009 event's. The full agenda is available here. Learn more about NIEM here.

Save the Date: NIEM 2011 Training Event Scheduled for August 23-25

The NIEM 2011 National Training Event (NTE) will be held August 23 - 25, 2011, at the Philadelphia Marriot Downtown in Philadelphia, PA.  We had a great turnout at our inaugural NTE held in Baltimore, Maryland, back in 2009.  NIEM now covers 12 domains; we’re strong and growing.  With the Cyber and Biometrics domains becoming official on February 14, and a few other potential domains forming, we look forward to seeing both new and familiar faces.

DHS to lead development of NIEM CYBER Domain

On Wednesday December 8, the NIEM Program Management Office, as authorized by the NIEM Executive Steering Council executed a NIEM Domain Stewardship Agreement for the standup of the NIEM Cyber domain.  The work for this started with a small project sponsored by Kshemendra Paul, now the Program Manager for the ISE, with help from the NIEM PMO, and most notably recent efforts by the NPPD CIO's office.
