New national surveillance for babesiosis, a potentially life-threatening parasitic infection transmitted by ticks, will provide more and better data to help reduce the burden of disease. Babesiosis can also be transmitted through a blood transfusion or in rare cases, from mother to infant during pregnancy. For more information, see MMWR (July 13, 2012) and CDC's Babesiosis website
