About GIS

A (GIS) geographic information system uses computers and software to graphically represent the relationship between spatial location and database attributes. GIS takes the numbers and words from rows and columns in databases and spreadsheets and puts them on a map. It allows you to visualize and interpret data in ways not possible in a tabular form.

A GIS integrates common database operations, such as query and statistical analysis, with the ability to see how data relates in space and time. The maps produced with a GIS are useful for showing places and the events that occur there.

With a GIS you can:

• Analyze spatial variations in health, outcomes
• Select new clinic locations based on a variety of factors
• Conduct environmental risk assessments
• Evaluate availability of health care
• Map confidential information by aggregating to census tract , county, or some other spatial unit
• List provider locations closest to a given address
• Track the spread of disease
