Principal officials
The work of the North Atlantic Council and its committees is supported by an International Staff. It comprises the Office of the Secretary General, six Divisions, the Office of Resources and the Office of Security. Each Division is headed by an Assistant Secretary General (Principal Officials).

Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy
Ambassador Dirk Brengelmann is NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy. He is responsible for advising the Secretary General on political issues affecting the security of the Alliance, including NATO’s partnership relations and its interaction with other international organisations; chairing the meetings of Senior Political Advisers of the Allied Delegations at NATO Headquarters; and directing the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division of the NATO International Staff. more >>

Ambassador Gábor Iklódy is NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges. Patrick Auroy
Assistant Secretary General for Defence Investment
Lieutenant General (Armaments) Patrick Auroy was born on 30 April 1955 in Orléans (France). In October 2009 he took up the post of Deputy Director General of the DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement), the armaments branch of the French MoD, which he served in the course of his successive professional duties. more >>

Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy
Ambassador Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović took up her position as NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy on 4 July 2011. Having previously served as Croatia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and, more recently, as Ambassador of Croatia to the United States (2008 – 2011), Ambassador Grabar-Kitarović is well-versed in Euro-Atlantic diplomacy and security issues. more >>

Stephen F. Smith is the Director of the NATO Office of Security. He is the principal security advisor to the NATO Secretary General and the North Atlantic Council and has the overall responsibility for the effective development of security policy and programmes and their implementation at all NATO civil and military bodies and NATO-wide. He deals with all aspects of protective security, counter-intelligence, intelligence assessment and counter-terrorism in international fora. more >>

Legal Adviser
Peter Olson is the Legal Adviser to the Secretary General and the international staff of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the senior lawyer in NATO. He is responsible for all legal aspects of NATO headquarters' institutional, internal and external relationships and operations. more >>
