Ms. Susan Swart (Department of State CIO) visited senior leaders from USAFRICOM on October 29, 2010 to discuss USAFRICOM's Information Technology collaboration requirements and to promote a classified Defense Connect Online (DCO) collaboration solution for 14 US Embassies located in Africa. COL Childers (DISA Africa Field Office Commander) hosted her visit.
Because of US Africa Command's pressing need to expedite the capability development with its Africa Partner Nations, US Africa Command requested support from the Joint Staff with funding and efforts to extend DCO services to include Offices of Security Cooperation and Senior Defense Officials/Defense Attaches at US Embassy locations in US Africa Command's Area of Responsibility. Ms. Swart provided US Africa Command's senior leaders insight on the Department of State's efforts in assessing mission assurance concerns, researching courses of action, and ensuring the appropriate support responsibilities in order to provide sustainment of the classified system once in place.
Efforts are underway between the Department of State and US Africa Command to establish a classified DCO collaboration solution. The extension of this capability to the US Embassies is a logical next step in realizing the full potential of DCO supporting the Command's efforts in Africa.
This was a successful visit. The Department of State CIO Office will continue to direct assistance and ensure the hardware intrusion testing remains a high priority so timelines are met for the initial 14 Embassy in Africa. US Africa Command will continue its partnership with the DoS and DISA to operationalize the full DCO collaboration with its OSCs at Embassies in Africa.
