DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania -- The mission to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania was an interesting and rewarding experience. As this was my second trip to sub-Sahara Africa, I had an idea of what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised on our arrival into the city as, in many ways Dar Es Salaam would fit well in South Florida. With the beautiful green landscapes entwined through a booming metropolis, if not for driving on the left side of the road, I would have thought I was back home.
Our mission was to participate in the 2010 Tanzanian Logistics Conference with the Tanzanian Peoplees Defense Force. Having worked with other foreign militaries, I was excited to have the opportunity to make friends and learn of the organizational culture of the TPDF. We were graciously received on the first day of the conference and introduced to the conferencees other participants. I enjoyed the opportunity provided by the slower pace of the first day to talk with TPDF soldiers on a personal level.
I found the officers of the TPDF to be very attentive and possessing a strong desire to excel at and expand their understanding of how the U.S. military conducts logistic estimates and operations. It was a rewarding experience to participate in the discussions and witness the interactions between the various working groups in the conference. Each had their own perspective on the presented subjects and all benefited from the discourse.
A high point of the mission was the closing ceremony and the social afterwards. The words of the guest speaker, Colonel Mangwengula of the TPDF, spoke of the importance of building relationships between the TPDF and U.S. forces and how conferences of this type were constructive. It was an excellent finish to a great week.
