Note: Lieutenant Colonel Mark Sojourner, along with Dan Seller, Don Lewis and Jay Osborne, with U.S. Africa Command's Strategy, Plans and Programs office, recently conducted a four-day site survey to Yaounde and Douala, Cameroon.
Our team travelled to Cameroon to meet with the country team there and discuss enhancing future security cooperation efforts with Cameroon. We spent a lot of time with our U.S. Embassy counterparts on the business side of the trip, but also got to get out and experience some of the food and culture of Cameroon. I'm afraid that I may have put on a couple of pounds! Both cities offer many opportunities to dine well. I also recommend the night time view of Yaounde from the Panoramic Lounge atop the Hilton.
It was very interesting to see the Cameroonian micro-economy at work. There are small stands lining the streets of both cities selling everything imaginable. Another experience I won't forget was the trip down the highway from Yaounde to Douala (a single lane in each direction) at 120km/h, passing logging trucks carrying gigantic tree trunks on their way to the port. I even got a morning run in while we were in Douala, although 24C at 0630 with mid 90s humidity didnt make it easy!

Glad to know you had a great experience during your visit to Cameroon. There are many Cameroonians serving in the US military including me who would be of assistance should you ever need help with developing any sort of partnership with that nation.
