Worldwide Conflict Management Capacity Building Programs

Many of our programs are not limited to a specific conflict, but are designed to build conflict response capacity worldwide by increasing the skills of conflict management academics and professionals who then work wherever the need is the greatest.

Some of the organizations that the Academy is currently partnered with include:

ACOTA (State Department's Africa Contingency Operation Training and Assistance Program)

At the request of the State Department’s Africa Contingency Operation Training and Assistance Program (ACOTA), the Academy conducts regular training workshops for African military officers who will be commanding units deploying as peacekeepers as part of the United Nations African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and other missions.

Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS)

The Institute, in partnership with the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS), holds seminars in Newport, Rhode Island for senior government officials and military officers of various countries. The seminar focuses on conflict management skills useful in conducting international humanitarian and peace operations. This seminar is held in conjunction with DIILS’ five week training on "Military and Peacekeeping Operations in Accordance with the Rule of Law."

IADC (Inter-American Defense College)

In conjunction with Inter American Defense College (IADC) and the Organization of the American States (OAS), the Institute conducts one-week workshops for senior Latin American and Caribbean military officials as well as diplomatic officials held at Fort McNair, Washington DC. The seminar focuses on improving and applying diplomacy skills in the areas of conflict analysis, problem-solving, communication, negotiation, mediation, and third party skills.

International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP)

The Institute offers seminars in conflict management for participants in a State Department International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). The State Department program’s purpose is to introduce participants to American governmental, NGO, and academic institutions that specialize conflict resolution.

Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)

The Institute has established a close relationship with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)--the world’s largest regional security organization, whose 56 participating states (including the U.S.) span the geographical area from Vancouver to Vladivostok. USIP conducts many workshops for OSCE. The seminars are held in various countries with diverse OSCE groups but generally focus on multilateral diplomacy, negotiation, mediation and third party communication skills. Our on-line REACT course is also noteworthy - it is required for Americans seconded by the U.S. Government for employment with OSCE.

Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU)

The Institute, in partnership with the Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU), holds workshops in Vicenza, Italy for police forces from various countries. The workshop focuses on conflict management skills that are valuable for improving their capacities as law enforcement professionals and contributors to peacebuilding operations. This workshop is held in conjunction with CoESPU’s training program
