Data and Analysis for Transportation Research

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) — in conjunction with the national laboratories — conducts a wide range of statistical research on energy use, economics, and trends in transportation.

    The Transportation Energy Data Book is an assembly and display of statistics and information that characterize transportation activity, and presents data on other factors that influence transportation energy use.

Reports and Papers

  • Future U.S. Highway Energy Use: A 50-year Perspective
    This is a report that the U.S. Department of Energy launched in an effort to analyze the long-term (to 2050) energy future of highway transportation in the United States, with a focus on fuel supply and demand.

  • Multi-Path Transportation Study
    The Multi-Path Transportation Futures Study (short title: "Multi-Path Study") examines the vehicle and fuel technology pathways and scenarios that could lead to significant reductions in U.S. petroleum use and significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Consumer Views on Transportation and Energy (PDF 1.4 MB) Third Edition, January 2006. This report was written to provide the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) with an idea of how the American public views various transportation, energy, and environmental issues.     How fuel-efficient are today's vehicles? This Web site from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes an interactive, online database of light-duty vehicle information that can help you make a purchase decision based on fuel economy. You'll also find information on current and future technologies to improve energy efficiency and help the environment.

    • Annual Energy Outlook
      The Annual Energy Outlook 2007 presents a projection and analysis of US energy supply, demand, and prices through 2030.

    • International Energy Outlook
      Published annually by the DOE's Energy Information Administration (EIA), these documents provide current energy use statistics and projections to 2020.

    • Energy Efficiency Data
      This site provides an in-depth discussion of the concept of energy efficiency and how it is measured, measurement, summaries of formal user meetings on energy efficiency data and measurement, as well as analysis of greenhouse gas emissions as related to energy use and energy efficiency.

  • Federal Highway Administration, Office of Highway Policy Information
    A site providing highway-related data from federal, state, and local sources.

    • Highway Statistics
      Published annually by the Federal Highway Administration, the Highway Statistic Series consists of annual reports containing analyzed statistical data on motor fuel; motor vehicles; driver licensing; highway-user taxation; State and local government highway finance; highway mileage, and Federal aid for highways.

    • Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey
      An ongoing Federal Highway Administration effort to collect information on travel in the United States by households. This survey provides data needed to address the major issues in transportation today.

    • Traffic Volume Trends
      Published monthly by the Federal Highway Administration, this report is based on hourly traffic count data collected at approximately 4,000 continuous traffic counting locations nationwide, as reported by the States. These data are used for calculating percent change in traffic over time.

  • U.S. Department of Transportation: Bureau of Transportation Statistics
    A site providing statistics on roads, the airline industry, bridges, and other transportation areas.

  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: Office of Transportation and Air Quality
    Information on protecting health and the environment by regulating air pollution from motor vehicles, engines, and the fuels used to operate them, and by encouraging travel choices that minimize emissions.
