PEACHTREE CITY, GA — June 19, 2006 — Dr. Elaine Beraza, Director, Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESSS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) announced today that Mr. Hugh McKinnon has been named principal of Mahaffey Middle School, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. McKinnon is currently assistant principal at Andersen Middle School, Guam.

"We're pleased that Mr. McKinnon will join Fort Campbell Schools as the principal of Mahaffey. He brings unbounded enthusiasm, a varied background, and a firm grasp on practices leading to education excellence," said Fort Campbell Community Superintendent Martha Brown. "He is a great match for a great school."

Originally from Lake Tahoe, Nevada, McKinnon earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, and served as a student teacher in a self-contained sixth grade class. In 1993, he became an elementary teacher in Guam, teaching military dependents. While working as an instruction specialist in the Guam public schools, he earned his master's degree from the University of Guam.

McKinnon helped establish the DDESS schools on Guam in 1997 and worked as an ESL teacher and school improvement leader at DDESS Guam South Elementary/Middle School for five years. He transferred to DoDDS-Europe where he taught first grade at A. T. Mahan Elementary School in Kefavik, Iceland, before returning to Guam to serve as assistant principal of Andersen Middle School.

McKinnon and his wife, Lori, have a two-year old son and are expecting their second child in August.
