As U.S. Africa Command's Quality of Life chief, I conducted a staff assistance visit to Camp Lemonier on 29 August - 2 September 2009.
The purpose of the visit was to assist in the establishment of a Military Family Life Consultant (MFLC) at Camp Lemonier and visit the military personnel at the Djibouti Embassy. I was accompanied by the MFLC, Program Manager-Europe and the consultant.
The overall visit went very well and it was a very profound moment in the history of the MFLC program. For the first time, a MFLC program has been implemented in such a remote location as Camp Lemonier on the continent of Africa. This addition now brings a total of three consultants supporting the team at the headquarters in Stuttgart, and at Alconbury for our Molesworth detatachment in England.
The Military Family Life Consultant program is a non-medical service which augments medical and mental health services already in place to combat relationship issues and deployment stressors that our service members and their family members are experiencing.
The reception of the consultant by the Command Joint Task Force- Horn of Africa and the Camp Lemonier staff ensured the consultant was fully operational in a very short time period and readily available to assist the service members, civilians, and US contractors on the camp. Leadership at both levels was engaged and supportive of the services the program offers.
During my trip I also visited the Djibouti Embassy and Al Sabih were I had the privilege of meeting some great Americans supporting the US mission as well as providing support to the Djiboutian government. The command and base support are continuing to work closely in improving the quality of life for the personnel living on the camp and those serving throughout the Horn of Africa. They are very proactive and attuned to the quality of life needs of the members both in the command and on camp.
