This past week, the Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa Sergeant Major, Scott Mykoo and I had the honor of attending the 30th Tarehe Sita celebration at the invitation of the Ugandan People's Defense Force (UPDF) Chief, GEN Aronda Nyakairima. This event marked the 30th anniversary of the start of a revolution against oppression and the establishment of the UPDF, led by Yoweri Museveni, the current President.
Tarehe Sita was the culmination of the annual UPDF Army Week which is marked by community service and civil affairs support to the Ugandan people. This year's theme was "Enhanced peace, security and stability for sustained national and regional development", and was attended by senior military delegations from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, and Sudan. It was good to connect with friends and counterparts, many of whom we knew from previous regional military engagements.
The day was filled with music, speeches from local and national leadership, award presentations by the Commander-in-Chief, and was accented by the intense sun, brightly colored flags, and strong gusts of wind that dusted everything with a coating of powdered red clay.
During his talk, GEN Aronda introduced each of the senior leaders from the military delegations to President Museveni. The pride, commitment and discipline shown by more than 1,500 UPDF soldiers that stood in formation for the duration of the event and passed in review three times was impressive, and reflected the professionalism and level of commitment they give to peace support operations in the region.
The pride and appreciation the local community showed for their troops was equally impressive, and left a strong impression of the value of military support and service to populations, in addition to recognized traditional roles.
