Petty Officer 2nd Class Vince Beard is with the U.S. Naval Forces Europe - Africa Band which performed in Accra, Ghana as part of a two-week, three-country engagement. The performances, in support of the Africa Partnership Station, feature the NAVEUR-NAVAF Band and local musicians.
Flagship and Top Brass performed at Reverend Teye Memorial School today. The school had its own band, which played The Star Spangled Banner in our honor followed by the Ghana Anthem. It is not common to see schools with their own bands in Africa... it was special to see their performance and understand the effort they must have invested in learning this song just for us! Our Top Brass began the concert with a few popular jazz selections and instrument demonstrations, followed by our rock band "Flagship" that performed several songs ranging from Ray Charles to Alicia Keys. The kids were full of energy...MU2 Kori Gillis even led the school in singing and dancing. The school band played a few songs at the conclusion, which was a great way to end the concert. The director provided high praise and also expressed appreciation to Flagship and Top Brass for the performances. Today added yet another great experience to our time in Ghana!
