Seminar on Transnational Organized Crime and Narcotics Trafficking
On 27-31 July 2009, a team from the U.S. Africa Command Office of Legal Counsel and the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) traveled to Freetown, Sierra Leone to lead a 5 day executive-level seminar on Transnational Organized Crime and Narcotics Trafficking. The seminar was attended by 50 members of the Sierra Leone National Law Enforcement Community. Many of these attendees are directly involved in counter narcotics law enforcement operations and included agents and officers from the Joint Drug Interdiction Task Force, the National Drug enforcement Agency, Customs Department and Immigration agency.
The seminar focused on the drug trafficking activities of West Africa but also covered many of the other current transnational organized crime activities such as the illegal trafficking of diamonds, cigarettes, humans, as well as computer based fraud and the associated money laundering. The conference compared U.S. experiences and law to the laws of Sierra Leone in an effort to encourage the conference members to learn and understand their own laws.
The team was impressed with the passion displayed by the attendees and their commitment to fighting the increasing use of their country by transnational organized criminal enterprises. The Sierra Leoneans and the US Embassy (especially the Defense Attache's Office) were outstanding hosts and all look forward to future engagement between our nations.
