Washington, Dec 8, 2009 -

Today, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on President Obama’s speech on job creation and economic growth at the Brookings Institution:

“President Obama’s speech established an important roadmap for accelerating job creation and investing in Main Street.  Through targeted investments in small businesses, infrastructure, and making homes more energy efficient, we can continue to create jobs and strengthen our economy.  By using untapped TARP funds, we can invest in our nation without increasing our deficit.  These proposals build on the Recovery Act, which has recently been credited by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office for creating as many as 1.6 million jobs.

“House Democrats and President Obama are working every day to create a new foundation for economic growth in America, despite the best efforts of Republicans to halt this progress.  Democrats know that by redirecting a portion of TARP funds away from big Wall Street firms to investment in small businesses and Main Street, we can continue to rebuild our economy.”
