African Media Covers Armed Forces of Liberia Activation Ceremony
The graduation of Liberian service members and the activation of a new infantry battalion on August 29, 2008 marked an historic day for the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) and was widely covered in the Liberian news media.
The ceremony included remarks by President of Liberia Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf; U.S. Army General William E. Ward, commander of U.S. Africa Command; and U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
An article from the Analyst Newspaper (Liberia) reported on the growing numbers of commissioned officers in the new Liberian Armed Forces as the organization continues to rebuild and strengthen its capabilities.
Liberia's military was demobilized in 2003 as part of an international peace initiative following the nation's 14-year civil war. With the assistance of the United States, the AFL is rebuilding through a program known as the Security Sector Reform.
The graduation ceremony August 29 was the fifth and last graduating class under the Security Sector Reform, and will bring the AFL to its peak number of 2,133 members.
The Inquirer (Liberia) highlighted segments of Ward's speech at the activation ceremony, where he challenged soldiers to exhibit loyalty, respect, and courage as they perform their duties for the AFL.
"Congratulations on your activation," said Ward. "Together with today's graduates and the projected stand up of the second battalion, you are the foundation of Liberia's new Army. This foundation is essential to Liberia's growth as a nation and I am proud to be here to celebrate this with you."
The News (Monrovia) covered the speeches of Ward and Sirleaf in an article titled, "Africom Commander Urges Solders To Respect Constitution."
Referring to Ward, the article said, "The U.S. Military Chief challenged the graduates to put into practice what they acquired and make the difference as the country witnesses the re-birth of a new army."
The article also covered remarks by Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who reminded soldiers that "lawful order is the foundation of military professionalism" and asked soldiers to prepare themselves for future challenges.
According to Sirleaf, the Liberian government is considering implementing policies that would further strengthen the AFL.
Sirleaf said Liberia stands ready to take the opportunity as a strategic partner with AFRICOM in promoting peace, regional security and stability.
