Washington, Aug 5, 2010 - Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on the Medicare and Social Security Trustees reports:

“Today’s reports from the Medicare and Social Security Trustees show that Medicare’s solvency was extended by an additional 12 years because of health care reform. The Trustees’ report confirms that the new health care law strengthens and improves the financial outlook of Medicare. And as health care reform continues to be implemented, we’ll continue to see Medicare get stronger so that current and future beneficiaries can continue to benefit from this highly successful program.

“Despite Social Security’s long-term challenges, the Trustees reassure Americans that they can rely on Social Security paying full benefits for at least another quarter-century. Social Security is the most important source of retirement income and disability protection for millions of Americans. While Social Security isn’t in financial crisis, we must ensure that Social Security continues to provide retirees and the disabled with financial stability and security.

“If Washington Republicans had their way they would dismantle the Medicare program as we know it and partially privatize Social Security – gambling the financial and health security of our seniors on risky bets. These were some of the exact same ideas George Bush put forward and were rejected by the American people and now is not the time to go back.”
