Major Concepts/Content: The Navy JROTC IV (Naval Science 4) course is designed to provide definition of management; the elements of the leadership process; practical exercise in the development of leadership skill; the role of cadets as leaders; the value of physical exercise and conditioning, and to learn about the basic elements and requirements for national security and their personal obligations as American citizens to contribute toward national security.

Major Instructional Activities: Instructional activities will include the following:

• instruction in patriotism
• development of informed and responsible citizens
• promoting habits of orderliness and precision, and to develop respect for constituted authority
• development of personal honor, self-reliance, individual discipline, and leadership
• promoting and understanding of the basic elements and requirements for national security
• development of respect and understanding for a constituted authority in a democratic society
• development of an interest in the military service as a possible career
• orientation visits to military installations, ships, bases, and historical sites will be conducted

Major Evaluative Techniques: Cadets will take a formal test on each academic unit. Written and/or oral reports will be evaluated for content and form. In the leadership portion of the course, cadets will be evaluated on the performance of assigned duties, personal uniform inspections, marching ability, proper performance of military drill and ceremonies, and naval U.S. customs and courtesies.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the Navy JROTC IV course, cadets should be expected to:

• demonstrate knowledge of naval leadership, training and evaluation.
• demonstrate knowledge of American civilian responsibilities.
• demonstrate an understanding of international law as it applies to countries using the sea
• demonstrate an understanding of naval history from 1945 to the present, and to include: demobilization, the cold war period, the Korean War,
• developments and confrontations with other nations, the war in Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf situation.
• demonstrate an understanding of the Navy’s role in national strategy and naval operations in upholding the democracy principles America was founded on.
• demonstrate an understanding of electricity and naval electronics.
• demonstrate an understanding of naval weapons.
• demonstrate an understanding of the three challenges facing the U.S. Navy to include: support of our forces logistically throughout the world, the declining American merchant marine, and to keep our military forces abreast of the ever-increasing pace of modern technology.
