Major Concepts/Content: The Navy JROTC I (Naval Science 1) course is designed to present the history, purpose, and objectives of the Navy JROTC program; introduce cadets to the precepts of citizenship, the elements of leadership, and basic military discipline. This course is also designed to engender a sound appreciation for the heritage and traditions of America, with recognition that the historically significant role of sea power will be important in America's future, and develop in each cadet a growing sense of pride in his/her organization, associates, and self.

Major Instructional Activities: Instructional activities will include the following:

  • an introduction to the Navy JROTC program, its goals and objectives
  • instruction in naval leadership and the principles involved in developing a following
  • the missions and organization of naval ships
  • the basis of our government, the Navy missions and its people
  • the military importance of major maritime geographic areas
  • the role of sea power in the development of the United States
  • naval history and heritage from the American Revolution through 1815
  • common tools and terminology of navigation -equipment and terminology used in basic seamanship
  • principles of health education and the effects of drug and alcohol abuse
  • military drill, commands, and ceremonies
  • orientation visits to military installations, ships, bases, and historical sites will be conducted

Major Evaluative Techniques: Cadets will take a formal test on each academic unit. Written and/or oral reports will be evaluated for content and form. In the leadership portion of the course the cadets will be evaluated on the performance of assigned duties, personal uniform inspections, marching ability, proper performance of military drill and ceremonies, and naval U.S. customs and courtesies.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the Navy JROTC I course, cadets should be expected to:

  • know the Navy JROTC organization and the requirements for success in the Navy JROTC program.
  • exhibit an understanding of basic naval leadership and following traits and principles.
  • recognize and learn the organizational elements of, and relationships within, a typical Navy shipboard organization, and learn the different type of naval ships and their mission.
  • understand the basis of our government, the Navy's mission, and how Navy people support that mission.
  • demonstrate knowledge of maritime geography by identifying major maritime geographic areas and relate these to their military importance.
  • understand the importance of sea power in the development of the United States and its role as the nation's forward line of defense.
  • see the effect of major maritime nations and activities on U.S. Naval history and heritage
