Formed in 1961, the Laboratory of Molecular Biology aims to bring together scientists with a broad range of expertise in biological structure and function, so that geneticists, biochemists, and developmental biologists can interact with physical chemists and structural biologists to address problems of mutual interest. That aim is reflected in the diverse biology under study within the lab, including:
- The structural basis of Toll receptor function in innate immunity
- Chromatin organization and its impact on gene regulation
- V(D)J recombination during development of the acquired immune system
- Phage Mu transposition and molecular patterning in prokaryotic systems
- Retroviral integration into the host genome
- Vesicular trafficking, membrane scission, and HIV virus particle budding
- Transcriptional control of cell fate specification during animal development
- The structural basis of DNA transposition
- The structural basis of DNA replication, repair, and recombination
- Membrane protein structure and function in transport and signaling
- ER-associated protein degradation (ERAD) and protein homeostasis
