Mayor Quan and Ms. Teng are Chinese American women with accomplishments and political success.  Mayor Quan spoke about the challenges and successes of leading a busy city.  She told the story of her family’s move from San Francisco to Oakland immediately following the 1906 earthquake and fire.

As an Oakland native, Mayor Quan has tirelessly worked to make things better in her city.  Mabel Teng is the Director of the Chinese Cultural Center in San Francisco.  She spoke about her move from Hong Kong as a young girl to San Francisco. Through her hard work and dedication to fairness for Asian Americans, Mable Teng rose to the point where she ran and was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Both Mayor Quan and Ms. Teng overcame obstacles and became the first Asian American woman in their respective area.  The Region IX Asian American Pacific Islander Committee provided traditional Taiwanese dancers and Asian food samplings.
