Sustainable Communities Grant: $400,000 for West Sacramento

Mayor Cabaldon listens as Cynthia Abbott addresses audience.

HUD announces a $400,000 Sustainable Community grant for West Sacramento to fund a transit-oriented development strategy.  It is also for a complete community strategy for the Washington District.  Twenty seven communities and organizations will receive Community Challenge grants.  29 regional areas will receive Regional Planning grants.  The goal of the Sustainable Communities grants is to help communities and regions improve their economic competitiveness by connecting housing with good jobs, quality schools and transportation.

HUD Field Office Director Cynthia Abbott made the announcement at the November 21 event in West Sacramento.  Joining her at the Washington District’s Gateway Monument was Mayor of the City of West Sacramento Christopher Calbaldon.

The $400,000 sustainable communities award will address community issues and initiate solutions.  These will be related to infrastructure deficiencies, transit service needs, regulatory barriers, infill development site opportunities, and neighborhood preservation concerns to advance transit-oriented, high-density development in the district. The focus will also be on existing and future community assets.  It will also address needs related to affordable housing, education, recreational opportunities, and access to employment for residents of the predominantly low-income district.
