Ward Honored with Lifetime Leadership Award at 100 Black Men of America 2009 Conference
Editor's Note: Patrick Barnes is a public affairs specialist at the U.S. Africa Command Liaison Office at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. More about the 100 Black Men of America Conference can be found at http://www.africom.mil/getArticle.asp?art=3116&lang=0.
Last Friday night at the New York Hilton in midtown Manhattan, I had the opportunity to witness General Ward receive a lifetime leadership award from the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. during the group's 23rd Annual Conference. General Ward was one of several distinguished Americans recognized during the conference including L. Douglas Wilder, former Governor of Virginia and first African American to be elected to the statehouse, and New York Governor David Patterson.
While accepting the award, General Ward described the importance of the work of the pioneering organization which has some 10,000 members in 116 chapters across the country, and the positive effects it continues to have on the lives of young people across the United States.
On a daily basis, I see many important many powerful and influential leaders come in and out of the Pentagon where I work. But, watching General Ward being recognized for being the epitome of outstanding leadership in action was a unique experience which also gave me a better appreciation for his humility, integrity and vision.
Before the award ceremony, General Ward was asked by a reporter what it took to become a four-star general. I found his answer both refreshing and insightful. In part, he said, "You can't be focused on yourself. You focus on doing things that cause your teammates to do better and, by doing so you elevate the achievements of the whole team." In other words Teamwork!
The 100 BMOA Inc. are committed to mentoring, educating and developing leadership skills in today's youth--they have an outstanding record of success. General Ward thanked the members of BMOA in attendance for showing all of the young people they encounter "what success looks like."
I believe that General Ward embodies what is required of each member of the command, both military and civilian, as we give our very best to improve the lives of people on the African continent. He inspires us to do our best and reminds us of all that can be achieved through perseverance, integrity, and strong leadership.
