Today General Ward administered an oath to his Inspectors General. Often conducted annually or when a new inspector assumes the duties of the office, this event solidifies and portrays the link between a commander and his inspector general staff.
Inspector general responsibilities include serving as impartial fact-finders and problem-solvers, assisting members of the command when normal channels fail, conducting assessments or inspections, investigating, reporting on readiness and as a U.S. Africa Command Inspector General, extending and advocating the concept throughout the command. While the actual oath is symbolic, the responsibilities are real and include the obligation to uphold the highest standards of conduct. Renewing that oath reminds each inspector that we must live in accordance with each and every standard regardless of opinion or convenience before we can expect others to do the same.
The oath is not unlike the one each U.S. military member takes upon entering service and renews periodically during a career, often in conjunction with promotions. The willingness to sacrifice personal benefit promotes discipline and integrity across an organization and is a key element in fighting corruption. The U.S. public esteems its armed forces because of their demonstrated willingness to adhere to standards and laws.
Voluntarily taking the oath as administered by General Ward is our commitment to U.S. Africa Command, to each member of the command and to our African partners that we will adhere to the standards so that we can remain impartial and able to assist and assess in an unbiased manner. Whether you need an inspector general to help improve the foxhole or to prevent fraud waste or abuse, we are ready to act.
If you require assistance or need to report a violation of standards, please contact us at 421-2682.
