Department of State Overview
The mission of the Department of State is to advance freedom for the benefit of the American people and the international community by helping to build and sustain a more democratic, secure, and prosperous world composed of well-governed states that respond to the needs of their people, reduce widespread poverty, and act responsibly within the international system.
Combating violent extremism is not only a U.S. concern. Accordingly, robust and regular two-way information sharing and collaboration with international partners continue to be cornerstones of our effort to thwart terrorist attacks.

Namibia has pioneered significant innovations in community engagement designed to protect its spectacular natural resources -- particularly its wildlife -- and provide a new source of income for its people. Its practices also give its people an opportunity to became more engaged in the decisions that affect their lives and their...

Committed to moving the global community onto electronic payments in place of physical cash, the Alliance will help the world's poorest families join the modern economy and realize the benefits of a more transparent, inclusive, cash-light world. I'm optimistic that this Alliance will help usher in a new era of opportunity for some of the most...
The days are long for the women of Yeumbeul, a village on the outskirts of Dakar, Senegal. But after hours of selling fruit in the market, house chores and caretaking for their families, they flock eagerly to the local community center for evening literacy classes. Among them is twenty-year old Kewe Ndiayea, who dreams of becoming a fashion designer, but was forced to leave the school at age eleven when her family could no longer afford the $2 monthly tuition. Today, literacy classes are...

My day started with refugee families headed to America in the near future, followed by a meeting with UNHCR to discuss the plight of thousands of refugees living in Turkey but, for one reason or another, are struggling.
At the Resettlement Support Center run by the...
