UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM MOURNS PASSING OF DOROTHY HEIGHT

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum mourns the passing of Dorothy Height. Respected and revered for her contributions to the civil rights movement, in 1980 she was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve on the first United States Holocaust Memorial Council, chaired by Holocaust survivor and later Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel. A major charge of the Council was bringing to reality a national memorial museum to the Holocaust in Washington D.C. During her eight year term on that governing body, Dorothy Height was part of the effort to create a museum that today is a symbol of America’s commitment to confronting hate and indifference -- ideals that she fought for and to which she devoted her life. The Museum extends its deepest condolences to her family.
