    Historic river port

    The stately Jackson County courthouse, built in 1869-1872, serves as the centerpiece of Jacksonport State Park. In 1891, the county seat was moved to Newport and the town of Jacksonport dissolved. Today, exhibits in the park's 1872 courthouse and programs by park interpreters share the story of this historic river port. Admission to the courthouse is free. The park also has a campground and trails.

    Civil War battlefield

    A peaceful blanket of snow covers the hallowed ground of Pea Ridge National Military Park in northwest Arkansas. Approximately 26,000 soldiers engaged in combat on March 7 and 8, 1862, to decide the fate of Missouri and the western part of the country. The 4,300-acre site is now protected by the National Park Service, which calls it "one of the most pivotal Civil War battles and is the most intact Civil War battlefield in the U.S."
