Afghanistan: RC-West changing of authority

The transfer of authority ceremony of the Italian lead Regional Command West was held at West Camp Arena. The outgoing commander from “Sassari” Brigade, Gen. Luciano Portolano, was relieved by incoming RC West Commander, Gen. Luigi Chiapperini from “Garibaldi” Brigade.

HERAT, Afghanistan, March 31,2012 –  The transfer of authority ceremony of the Italian lead Regional Command West was held at West Camp Arena, Mar. 31.

The outgoing commander from “Sassari” Brigade, Gen. Luciano Portolano, was relieved by incoming RC West Commander, Gen. Luigi Chiapperini from “Garibaldi” Brigade.

The Italian Minister of Defence Giampaolo di Paola, ISAF Commander General J.R. Allen, the Governor of Herat Daud Shah Saba and many other religious, military and civilian authorities attended the event.

During his speech General Portolano described the outstanding progress the operations campaign made in the last six months together with ANFS.  “We worked together day by day, from North to South of RC-West. Italian women and men, ISAF personnel and ANSF soldiers, they all payed a high price due to the loss and injuries in the successful attempt to stop insurjents that never had problem to strike civilians or militaries. The Sassari Brigade leave a betterAfghanistanthanks to what have been done both for security and reconstruction, but there is still more to do.”

The Minister of Defence stated that he is honored to be in Afghanistan, “and honored to meet the afghan soldiers who are all brave and have done an excellent work. Afghanistan, as far as I have seen till now, is a beautiful country and for sure it deserves a better future. Whoever has lost his life in the attempt to keep it safe, fight insurgency and rebuild this country has made the most precious gift to all the people leaving here.”
